After childbirth, the mother’s body goes through a lot of changes, and recovery can be challenging. That’s why Michigan Acupuncture Studio offers a technique called Mother Warming, which is a postpartum treatment that can be done in the comfort of your own home to help energize and facilitate recovery.
Mother Warming utilizes Moxa, a herb that can be used to warm and stimulate acupuncture points through a process called moxibustion. This technique improves circulation, relieves pain, and boosts energy. The focus of the treatment is the abdomen, where Moxa is used to warm the channels and stop bleeding.
Mother Warming is a one-time treatment that should be done on day four or five postpartum to warm the abdomen. It’s important to note that Moxa should not be used on women who have a fever or experience night sweats as it can heighten these conditions.
The treatment is performed by moving the Moxa stick up and down the abdomen area from acupuncture point ‘Ren-2’ to ‘Ren-8’ for five to ten minutes or until the mother feels pleasantly warm. Then it is also used on the lower back area in a T-shape motion, starting on acupuncture point ‘Du-2’ and heading up to ‘Du-4’, then heading over to the side area of the sacrum.
After the treatment we advise to drink plenty of water, as Moxa can be quite drying.
To continue facilitating the body in building good quality qi and blood, we recommend having an acupuncture treatment about 10 to 14 days postpartum. If you’re interested in learning more about Mother Warming or booking an appointment, reach out to us today!
